The defending champions of ISL will be up against the fan favourites in the season opener, and no doubt that it will be a cracker of a game. But, there are many more things that add spice to this heated up rivalry. Let's put some light on it, to get a clearer aspect on them:
1.) Prabir Das VS Jessel Carneiro
Prabir Das, was one of the key players in the ATK’s lineup last season. The sneaky attack through the flanks and the perfect crosses to the strikers were something that opponents used to worry about a lot.
Jessel also played the same role for Kerala, but his role as a playmaker from behind was much more in last season. Since, the center backs are really strong for Kerala this time, we can expect Jessel to be more attacking and making those sideline runs. This might put pressure on Prabir das as both of them will be on the same side of the pitch.
2.) Wellington Phoenix Vs Wellington Phoenix
It will be the clash of the ex-Wellington Phoenix players, Roy Krishna,David Williams,Gary Hooper, this Friday. While we are quite aware of ATK’s double trouble, Gary is a new addition to the arsenal of Kerala in this transfer window, and also the most expensive one.
Gary has scored just 8 goals out of his 21 appearances, in A-league last season. On the other side, Roy Krishna has been the all time highest goal-scorer for Wellington Phoenix . The task on the shoulders of Gary would be immense, as fans will be having their eyes glued to him. But, we will have to wait to see how the much awaited Hooper storm turns out to be.
3.) Sandesh Jhingan
If something that had made Kerala fans heartbroken in this transfer window, was the transfer of Sandesh Jhingan. While Jhingan and Tiri were supposed to be a part of the KBFC’s lineup this season, but Corona has spoiled that plan. So, after a long time, thinking about the offers, Jhingan finally follows the path of Tiri, and now we will see them lining up against Kerala tomorrow.
But, Kerala didn’t give up, and they made two really great signings in the form of Costa and Bakary, along with the likes of Gary,Vincente. Costa is known for his firm control in the back,on the other hand,Bakary will be efficient in neutralising aerial threats(eg: Crosses from Prabir Das). The most promising thing to look at will be Sandesh playing against the club which he was a part of for the last six seasons. Exciting enough!!
4.) Sahal Vs Edu Garcia
Eelco’s formation was something, which worked against Sahal last season. So, with the addition of the new coach who likes to play with a 4-2-3-1 formation and an attacking style, we might see Sahal get more game time than last season(18 matches-792 mins), and we know what havoc he can create in the opponent’s defence.
If you forgot about the one, who is the playmaker king of ATKMB, then I guess you are a fan of KBFC. Known by the name of Super Sub, Edu Garcia will be putting up Kerala’s defence into test, every single time, he gets the ball on his feet. He has 6 goals and 3 assists to his name in last season, even after entering in the game during the second half. Only if double trouble was less in anyway, Garcia is always there.
5.) 4-2-3-1 Vs 3-5-2 :
KBFC:
- Key Threats: Roy Krishna, David Williams, Prabir Das,Edu.
- Sahal, Naorem and Rahul will be the main players for the attack from the Indian contingent of Kerala.
- Jessel and Nishu will be making those deadly flank runs along with falling back to help the defence.
- Albino will be someone to look out for, as Rehenesh was also good for North East but turned out as a failure for KBFC.
- Kerala has a better defence this time, so we may see a more attacking style of football from KBFC.
ATKMB:
- Key Threats: Gary , Rahul Kp, Sahal,Jessel.
- Havi and Carl will be controlling the ball from the middle of the pitch for ATK.
- Soosairaj and Prabir, will make the flank runs, and will be quite dangerous, considering their speed.
- Jayesh Rane will probably get more gametime, considering his lethal through balls and dribbling skills, last season.
- Having a three player defence weakens the defence lineup. So, if Habas will go with a 3-5-2 lineup, then there will be a little pressure on the back of the pitch for ATK.
- If Roy or Williams, gets injured during the gameplay, then they have only Manvir as the backup, as Jobby has been already ruled out of the tournament due to ACL injury.
