ISL Week 1: Highlights

It’s been around a week since football returned to the Indian soil, and fans must be enjoying it to the fullest. Let us take a quick look at the highlights of this week:

A new dawn in Hyderabad:

The team which went down on its knees last season, with 2 wins and 4 draws from 18 matches, seems to be quite confident this season under Marquez Roca's leadership. We saw a different brand of football, with 53% possession and 72% passing accuracy from the Hyderabad players. Hyderabad, starting with 7 Indian players in the lineup, ended the match on a winning note with 1-0 on the scoresheet. This definitely shows a great character and sets a positive mindset for the team, and also puts up a strong message for the other teams.

Exemplary performance by the Indian Lads :

The young Indian footballing fraternity has put up such an entertaining show to watch, which you would not like to miss. Anirudh Thapa, Liston Colaco, Akash Mishra, Wangjam Suresh, and many others have given us so many reasons to believe that the future of Indian football is in safe hands. While, on the senior side, players like Brandon Fernandes, Ashutosh Mehta, Rowlin Borges were seen showing their bit of experience, by extraordinary ball control and accurate passes.

The Under Dogs :

While the rivalries and the fierce gameplay were a treat to the eyes this week, one team has caught the attention of every one amongst all of this football fiesta, and that’s NorthEast United Fc. This team has defeated the favorites to win this season, Mumbai City Fc, and pulled a draw in the final minutes against Kibu’s strong side yesterday. Their defensive play, ball control in the center of the park (Khassa Camara, Apuia) along with a strong backline(Fox, Lambot, Ashutosh, Gurjinder) has given nightmares to their opponents. “ I am sorry to use this word, but I am fucking proud of my team” as the Neufc coach said after their match against KBFC last night, explains his delight after having such a great start to the season.

The Striker Fiasco:

The transfer window saw some real tussle between the clubs for getting the signings like Gary Hooper and Adam Le Fondre, but after week 1, it looks like all that glitters is not gold. Both of the strikers were not able to score from the two matches, apart from their one goal from a penalty each. We saw a few heavy touches from Hooper last night, but Fondre seems to be far from that feat too. The fans have been glued to the screens to watch their star strikers perform, but nothing exceptional has been seen from the strikers so far. We will have to wait for a few more matches to see how things turn out.
